Internship Opportunity for UNCG Student!

The Peace and Justice Network of the Triad (PJN) is looking for people with a working knowledge of website administration to work with a team of others to update our new interactive website, maintain our calendar of events, and ongoing communications with our site web center’s support team.

The new PJN website will expand our position as a hub for Triad-area activists working for peace, justice, and sustainability. Through community gathering, concerts and other activities we are committed to creating more open spaces for community organizations to interact, collaborative and celebrate community.

Professional web design or previous webmaster experience is NOT required, but we are looking for people who have a general familiarity with how the Web works and the key elements of effective website maintenance

Besides the benefit of working with a committed group of dedicated people, volunteers are also welcome to join the Peace and Justice Network planning team, and learn more about the vast array of organizations working to strengthen our local community.

Volunteers will learn more about alliance-building projects, community events and potlucks, social networking among progressive organizations and daily events that occur in Greensboro to strengthen collective partnerships and to build stronger connections among people and organizations.

CCI (Center for Critical Inquiry) has chosen a theme for the 2009-2010 year "Individuality, Community, Sustainability and Democracy." CCI will host a Faculty Read Series, which consists of discussions of five books on a Friday afternoons 3-4:30pm at the Faculty Center, with lead-discussants faculty who have a special interest in or expertise about the book under discussion. These events will occur between September 2009 and March 2010 - the first on September 18, 2009. Not only will there be these in person events but people who read the book, are asked to take a moment to post comments and respond to others on the CCI Forum.

I am part of the Planning Team and am coordinating the reorganization of our directory which is also part of a redesign project of our entire website. We are looking for someone who can help out with our tech work since our tech person left for a job in DC. He served essentially as our "webmaster." PJN's mission is to serve as the hub for Triad-area activists working for peace, social and economic justice, and environmental sustainability. We are in the process of updating our directory as well as providing more community networking opportunities for organizations to become more familiar with each others work and to collaborate more closely together. We've signed a contract with Market America who is working with us to create a new design and feel for our website, but we really need someone locally who can help function as a liaison to them and also to help with the weekly posting of events and sending out a calendar and would love to find a intern possibility for a students at UNCG.

Study Finds College Cafeteria Trays Can Increase Both Dish Use and Food Waste

The Seminar in Environmental Issues class at American University recently conducted a study that found that students that did not have cafeteria trays available in the lunchroom wasted 14.4 percent less food than those that did at lunch and a remarkable 47.1 percent less at dinner. The other part of the study measured the reduction in dishes used for those with and without trays. The study found a 22.5 percent reduction in dishes used at lunch and a 30.8 percent reduction in dishes used at dinner. Read more at treehugger.com

Earth Hour - A Global Event - Mar 28 @ 830pm

On Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 pm, I am taking part in Earth Hour - a global event in which millions of people will turn out their lights to make a statement of concern about our planet and climate change. I want to invite you to join, too! Sponsored by World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour got started just two years ago and is now the largest event of its kind in the world.

Last year, more than 50 million participated and the lights went out at the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and the Coliseum in Rome, just to name a few. Even Google's homepage went black for the day! In Israel, President Shimon Peres personally turned off lights in Tel Aviv. This year, Earth Hour will be even bigger - already 250 cities in 74 countries have agreed to take part including Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami and Nashville with more signing up every day. Around the world cities like Moscow, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Shanghai and Mexico City will turn out their lights. But Earth Hour isn't just for big cities - anyone can participate.

The Center for Energy Research and Technology will hold a conference on March 19 called "Sustainable Energy Alternatives and Their Impact on Low-Income Citizens." The conference is the result of a partnership with the American Association of Blacks in Energy. Workshops will focus on clean coal opportunities, green jobs, biomass uses and the effects of green technologies on personal lifestyles. All with a focus on impacts on the low-income community.

Sustainability Film of the Month for February

What: Black Diamonds- Charts the escalating drama in Appalachia over the alarming increase in large mountaintop coal mines. These mammoth operations have covered 1200 miles of headwater streams with mining waste; demolished thousands of acres of hardwood forest; and flattened hundreds of Appalachian mountain peaks. Directed by Catherine Pancake.

WHEN: Thursday Feb 26. Film starts at 6:30pm, followed by short discussion with Lenny Kohm, Campaign coordinator of Appalachian Voices, Lenny Kohm speaks tirelessly in defense of Appalachian mountains. As the recent disaster in Tennessee reminds us - there is no such thing as clean coal. Come see the film and discuss the important issue of mountain top removal with an expert.

Biking to UNCG

The Transportation Subgroup is looking for UNCG Staff and Faculty who bike to work. Whether its once a week or daily, we want to put together a list of cyclists we tap into for special programs, events, and most importantly feedback on the biking commute to UNCG. If you bike to UNCG or you know someone who bikes to UNCG, please email Mary Crowe at mlcrowe@uncg.edu .

We are working on a UNCG Commuter Challenge that will be staged between March 16 and May 1. At least one of the weeks will be dedicated to biking and will provide new and experienced bike commuters with lots of good information about biking to UNCG. Stay tuned for more info!
